Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
- 32 ounces frozen tater tots
- 2 cans (10.5 oz each) condensed cream of mushroom soup
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 medium diced onion (about 150g)
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- ยฝ cup milk
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- ยฝ cup diced green bell pepper (optional)
Instructions
- Step: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up, until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
- Step: Add diced onion, garlic, and green bell pepper (if using) to the skillet. Sautรฉ for 3 minutes until onions are soft and fragrant. Season with salt and pepper.
- Step: In a large mixing bowl, stir together cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, and half of the shredded cheddar cheese.
- Step: Add the cooked beef mixture to the bowl and stir until evenly coated and well combined.
- Step: Pour the beef and sauce mixture into a 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading evenly.
- Step: Top with frozen tater tots in a single layer, spacing them to avoid crowding.
- Step: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake at 375ยฐF (190ยฐC) for 20 minutes.
- Step: Remove foil, sprinkle remaining cheddar cheese on top, and bake uncovered for 10-15 minutes until tots are golden and cheese is bubbly. Cover loosely with foil if cheese browns too fast.
- Step: Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
Drain excess beef fat to avoid soggy casserole. Space tater tots to ensure crispiness. Cover casserole during first bake to steam and uncover at the end to crisp. Assemble ahead and refrigerate overnight; add 10 minutes to baking time if baking cold. For extra flavor, sautรฉ mushrooms with onions or add smoked paprika.
